ON LEAVING LINKEDIN

I am leaving Linkedin.  In a few days I will send Routledge the completed manuscript for what will be my last book, Beyond New Atheism and Theism: A Sociology of Science, Secularism, and Religiosity (I am posting an outline of the book on my blog this afternoon).  It is an indictment of “the rational animal,” homo sapien, that I have had to write such a book in the 21st century to demonstrate why religion is real and god is not. I am tired of the reign of stupidity in Washington and around the world, the glorification of entrepreneurship and professionalism in a world being destroyed by the ideology of capitalism (the economy that never was, isn’t, and never will be), people who need coaches, people who want to be coaches, everyone acting as if it’s perfectly normal for billions of dollars (precious natural and human resources) to be used for war machines most of which will never be used, the lack of compassion for living, breathing human beings that guides politics, the economy, and everyday life. Never mind the rampant Floridian ignorance about education and science which in the ordinary language of politics are left-wing activities or they are nothing.  Our species does not seem to be able to keep their noses out of everyone else’s business or to stifle being offended by everything from sexual choices to food preferences.  I have a job for the coaches: lighten up and teach others to lighten up. We live in a terrifying firestorm of meaninglessness, a cosmos we will never understand no matter how many James Webbs we peer through, and the thing we seem to do best is destroy planetary and human ecologies.  You need a coach? Read Nietzsche’s letter to his sister Elizabeth; read Richard Feynman on not being afraid of not knowing things. Don’t take the theologians seriously or those philosophers who spend thousands of hours and make careers out of endless commentaries on ontological proofs for the existence of God. Schopenhauer already pointed out that “Considered in the light of day and impartially, this famous ontological proof is now actually a most beloved piece of nonsense.” Schiller wrote  “that only the confounded acuteness of the proof keeps one from seeing it as extraordinarily stupid.” And yet this nonsense and stupidity underwrites endowed chairs and academic honors for the Plantinga’s of the world.  Wonder at theologians like Hans Küng who proclaim: "Now, without having to give up his reason, man encounters a God he can pray and offer sacrifice, again fall on his knees in awe and sing and dance before him. NO! I say: Ni Dieu, Ni Maître!
